Influence of aroclor 1242 concentration on polychlorinated biphenyl biotransformations in hudson river test tube microcosms.
نویسنده
چکیده
When 93.3 to 933 (mu)mol of Aroclor 1242 per kg was added to Hudson River sediment test tube microcosms, the rates of polychlorinated biphenyl biotransformations increased with increasing Aroclor 1242 concentration after a 4- to 8-week acclimation period. In contrast, when 37.3 (mu)mol of Aroclor 1242 per kg was added, polychlorinated biphenyl biotransformations occurred at slow constant rates.

Kinetics of polychlorinated biphenyl dechlorination by Hudson River, New York, USA, sediment microorganisms.
The kinetics of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) dechlorination by Hudson River (New York, USA) sediment microorganisms were investigated using Aroclor 1242 at 10 concentrations ranging from 0 to 900 ppm (0-11.2 micromol Cl/g sediment). The time course of PCB dechlorination and population growth were determined by congener-specific analysis and the most-probable-number technique, respectively, ov...
متن کاملStimulation of contraction of pregnant rat uterus in vitro by non-dechlorinated and microbially dechlorinated mixtures of polychlorinated biphenyls.
A previous study of six polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners showed that PCBs with four or fewer chlorines and ortho substitution stimulate uterine contraction frequency in vitro, whereas congeners with a greater number of chlorines or non-ortho substitution are inactive in vitro. We tested the hypothesis that PCB mixtures stimulate uterine contractions in a manner inversely related to the ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Degradability of Aroclor 1242 by an Aceticlastic Methanogenic Consortium
The rate and extent of degradation of Aroclor 1242 from contaminated surface soil was investigated, using aceticlastic mathanogenic consortia enriched from municipal anaerobic digester. Two different experiments, “intermediate feed” and “starve and feed” were conducted using triplicate 160-mL serum bottle microcosms, containing either 0.1 g, 1 g, 10 g, or 50 g of soil plus 100 mL of the inoculu...
متن کاملPolychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, furans, and organochlorine pesticides in belted kingfisher eggs from the upper Hudson River basin, New York, USA.
Nesting belted kingfishers (hereafter kingfishers, Ceryle alcyon) were studied on the Hudson River near Fort Edward south to New Baltimore (NY, USA) and three nearby river drainages in 2004. Concentrations of 28 organochlorine pesticides, 160 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, and 17 dioxin and furan (PCDD-F) congeners were quantified in kingfisher eggs. The pattern of organochlorine pes...
متن کاملEvidence for para dechlorination of polychlorobiphenyls by methanogenic bacteria.
When microorganisms eluted from upper Hudson River sediment were cultured without any substrate except polychlorobiphenyl (PCB)-free Hudson River sediment, methane formation was the terminal step of the anaerobic food chain. In sediments containing Aroclor 1242, addition of eubacterium-inhibiting antibiotics, which should have directly inhibited fermentative bacteria and thereby should have ind...
